HOSPITALITY: Design Lokal – Filipino Roots, Global Form

Design Brief

MAIN THEME:
HOSPITALITY: Design Lokal – Filipino Roots, Global Form
DESIGN OBJECTIVE:
Reimagine the Filipino hotel lobby as a welcoming
space that embodies global sophistication while
honoring traditional design roots. Students must
explore how indigenous materials, sustainable
craftsmanship, and modern styling can coexist
seamlessly in a hospitality setting.

Think outside the BOX!

Design Guidelines

Who Can Join?

  • Open to all Interior Design students across the Philippines

Design Scope

  • Lobby-only design with a maximum floor area of 120 sqm

Submission Requirements

  1. ARx: Full 120 sqm design
  2. Physical Booth Setup: 20 sqm (8 m L x 2.5 m D/W x 3 m H)
  3. 3D Renderings (up to 5 angles/views)
  4. Detailed Floor Plan & Layout
  5. Mood Board + Material Board
  6. 300-word Concept Narrative
  7. Sustainability Brief: Explain the use of local and sustainable materials with realistic, professional renderings (avoid cartoonish styles)

Budget

The final design should realistically work within a budget of
₱18,000.00 per square meter, which amounts to a total of
₱2,160,000.00 for the entire space. This budget must cover all
expenses, including labor and materials, and should account
for walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, furniture, and accessories

AR Development

The Top 3 finalists will bring their hotel lobby concepts to life by developing a full-scale, immersive Augmented Reality (AR) platform with a cutting-edge showcase where creativity meets technology. This digital experience must accurately represent the entire 120 sqm lobby, down to the last detail.

Participants are expected to create an AR model that includes furniture, fixtures, lighting schemes, finishes, material textures, ceiling treatments, and spatial flow—all rendered with high-fidelity realism. The goal is to allow users to virtually walk through the lobby, feel the ambiance, and understand the designer’s intent as if they were physically present.

Physical Booth Construction

The journey doesn’t end in the digital world. Each of the top 3 finalists will also build a 20 sqm (8m L x 2.5m D/W x 3m H) physical booth, showcasing a real-world section of their hotel lobby concept. This installation will be housed within a shell scheme exhibit space at PHILCONSTRUCT, offering attendees a tangible experience of your design.

The booth should reflect the core identity and standout features of your full 120sqm concept. From custom finishes and actual materials to curated furniture pieces and lighting treatments, everything should mirror your original design vision. This is your stage— make it immersive, polished, and unforgettable.

Competition Mechanics

Submission Mechanics
All participants must be a bonafide student at their respective schools and must be 3rd and 4th year Interior Design students during the period
of the competition (August to November 2025). Certificates of enrolment from the Registrar’s Office or other proof of enrollment must be
submitted together with the selected entries.

  • All interested participants are allowed to use any 3D rendering or software material.
  • No professional help is allowed.
  • Participants are expected to focus on design, creativity, and sustainability, ensuring that the materials specified are realistic and thoughtfully considered as the renderings themselves.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) elements are not restricted by sponsorship limitations, allowing the use of any creative assets in the digital execution of their work.
  • Entries are to be submitted by the participant digitally on or before September 22, 2025 (Monday) at 6 PM. From there, the judges will select the TOP 10 entries.

Top 10 Mechanics: Level Up Your Entry

  • The Top 10 will be required to submit a Tiktok Reel of their design process. The video should be a maximum of 1 minute in length and should contain student’s explanation of his/her design, behind the scenes footage, and the final output (3D walkthrough).
  • Final entries will then be uploaded onto the EDV website, linking to the social media pages.
  • Only three (3) individual winners and their respective schools will be chosen to advance and compete for the finals. Judges will select the Top 3 Finalists to move on to the grand showdown, which will feature both an Augmented Reality (AR) experience and the physical execution of their exhibit builds.

Top 3 Mechanics

The TOP 3 entries will be executed in the following manner:

  • Actual build-up and display during the PHILCONSTRUCT event
  • Basic expenses to be shouldered by the Philippine Constructors Association, Inc. (PCA)
  • Furniture, fixtures and other accessories to be applied from sponsors / partner establishments using the construction budget of Php 360,000.00 per student (20 sq.m.) as reference for cost estimate.
  • For the AR projects, participants can use elements, furniture, and fixtures without sponsorship requirements, enabling flexibility in design.

The following support will be provided by PCA for the winning students:

  1. POTENTIAL SPONSORS
  2. BASIC ALLOWANCE
  3. LABOR FOR CONSTRUCTION
  4. POWER SUPPLY
  • PCA will exert its best efforts to look for potential sponsors / suppliers of furniture, fixtures, appliances and other needed materials that may be used by the student finalists. All participating students will be given a list of sponsors who are willing to lend their products, furniture, and accessories to the winning entries during the actual build-up. CONTESTANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE THESE SUPPLIERS IN THEIR DESIGN SO WHEN THEIR ENTRY WINS, THE PRODUCTS FEATURED IN THEIR DESIGN CAN BE EASILY SOURCED. Should the contestants decide to use products from suppliers not included in the list and their entry wins, the students will have to source these products by themselves.
  • PCA will exert its best efforts to look for potential sponsors for travel and accommodation should the need arise.
  • PCA will advance Php 5,000.00 to each winner in support of their basic expenses in the preparation of the actual exhibit.
  • Each winning participant is entitled to a VIP Pass which will be used when purchasing materials or products from our sponsors.
  • Professional help must not be obtained during the contest proper.
  • Any damage caused by the contestant/s to the products of sponsors, other exhibitors, common property, or to other parties shall be the liability of the contestant/s.
  • The contestants must comply with rules concerning the use of the exhibition hall as prescribed by the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City.
  • The Organizers shall take all security precautions in the interest of the contestants. However, the Organizers shall not be held responsible for any loss or theft of the exhibit items at the exhibition halls during the build-up, exhibition, and dismantling period. The Organizers shall also not be held liable for any loss or damage to any articles belonging to the contestants.
  • Anyone caught violating any of the above-mentioned rules and regulations will automatically be disqualified from the competition.
